Located at the foot of the historic village of Afytos, Varkes Beach is one of the most photographed spots in Kassandra. Its name, which translates to "Small Boats," comes from the picturesque fishing boats that often moor in its calm, protected bay.

Why Varkes Beach is a Must-Visit

Unlike some of the more "noisy" beach bars in the region, Varkes maintains a balance between cosmopolitan comfort and natural beauty. The water here is incredibly shallow for several meters, making it a safe haven for parents with young children. The sand is soft and white, and the surrounding cliffs provide a stunning backdrop that reminds visitors of the Italian Riviera.

What to Expect

The beach is well-organized with sunbeds and umbrellas provided by local beach bars. However, there is still enough "free space" if you prefer to bring your own equipment.

  • The Water: Crystal clear and usually very calm, as the bay is protected from strong winds.
  • Food & Drink: You'll find excellent seafood taverns right on the sand, where you can eat with your feet almost touching the water.

Practical Information

Access

To reach Varkes Beach, you have to follow the road leading down from the center of Afytos. It is a steep descent, so if you are carrying heavy beach gear, driving is the best option. There is limited parking near the beach, so arriving early (before 10:30 AM) during high season is essential.

🌊 Looking for more? While Varkes is charming and local, Sani Beach offers a more high-end, resort-style experience just a short drive away.

Best Time to Visit

Early morning is magical at Varkes, as the water is as still as a mirror. Late afternoon is also great because the cliff provides some natural shade to parts of the beach, and the colors of the sunset reflecting on the sea are simply stunning.
